Rumi Wilco, Vilcabamba Ecuador

Richard and I left Saraguro and are now in Vilcabamba. The first couple of nights we stayed at Rumi Wilco, a very rustic place by the river. We had a bedroom in an adobe building, with shared washroom and shared kitchen. Quite comfortable, but very humid. They have hiking trails all over the property, and we enjoyed walking along the river. It was just a ten minute walk across the river to get into town.

One bird that sat still long enough to have its picture taken.

The owners, Orlando and Alicia, have this old Landrover to get around the property. Richard was very interested because his dad built the bodies for Landrover. This one was made in Birmingham in 1955, which means that his dad could have actually worked on it. He was feeling the vibes.

I'm not sure how I feel about Vilcabamba, but here are a few of my initial impressions. The weather is gorgeous, and there are no biting insects at this time. It is quite peaceful, even in town. Not much traffic or even pedestrians. There is a visible foreigner presence, who live here. Mostly older Americans, some young ones. I've heard the term "economic refugees, meaning they can live a decent life here on a very small income. Lots of smoking and drinking, apparently, and pot is readily available too.

It shouldn't really feel much different from Antigua, but it does. Here is safer, cleaner and  less needy. Despite that, and I don't know if it's just because we don't know anyone here, but it doesn't seem as inviting to me. We'll see if that feeling changes.
